*Each class is offered invidually. Students can sign up for multiple classes. Our summer workshop series is intended for young actors ages 12-17, Our classes are inclusive, and our instructors provide a supportive learning environment for all levels of experience.

Studio Playground acting classes for teens and young actors in Providence Rhode Island

Our one-day acting workshops provide an opportunity for middle and high school students to explore specific elements of actor training. Students take a deep dive into monologues, scene study, stage combat, audition techniques and Shakespeare. Each class includes a vocal and physical warm up, movement, and theater games. There is an invited showcase for friends and family at the end of each workshop for students to share their work.

June 3: Shakespeare & Physical Acting

Monday, June 3, 5pm-8pm

This workshop introduces actors in middle and high school to concepts for Shakespeare and physical acting. Using scenes and monologues from Shakespeare’s plays, students explore character development and poetic language while learning skills for collaboration and ensemble development.

June 10: Stage Combat

Monday, June 10, 5pm-8pm

This workshop introduces students to fundamental concepts for stage combat, including teamwork, communication, and storytelling. Actors will learn the value of safety, skill, and a collaborative rehearsal process using classical and contemporary material.

June 17: Scene Study

Monday, June 17, 5pm-8pm

Students explore scene study using material from classical and contemporary plays. Objectives for our scene study workshop include understanding concepts for script analysis, advanced concepts for character development, and working with multiple scene parters.

July 29: Monologues

Monday, July 29 12pm-3pm

Our monologue workshop for middle and high school students teaches students to apply concepts for character development and script analysis to performing monologues using material from contemporary plays.

August 5: Audition Techniques

Monday, August 5, 12pm-3pm

This workshop for actors in middle and high school teaches advanced concepts for audition techniques. Actors are assigned scenes and monologues from contemporary plays, film, and television material.

Does my student need prior acting experience?

Our classes are intended for all levels of experience. Whether this is your student’s first acting class or they have previous experience, our workshops foster individual growth and develop at the pace of each group. Studio Playground strive to create an environment in which all students feel welcome and accepted.

Who can attend the performance?

Friends and family are welcome to attend a brief performance at the end of each workshop. The purpose of the showcase is to provide an opportunity for students to share their work. We seek to create a low-pressure environment for students to perform.
